Christmas Tree Recycling
Be sustainable and help green your community! Drop off your Christmas tree at UBC Botanical Garden so it can be chipped into mulch and used on garden trails. Submit your donations in the drop box (suggested donation $5) and help Bayview Elementary School to expand its garden. This garden is a SPEC School Garden project.
Please remove all decorations, tree stands, lights and tinsel. Christmas trees only please (no yard trimmings, as potential invasive plants can harm the Garden).
Dates: Monday December 26, 2011 to Sunday January 8, 2012
Time: 9:30am to 4:30pm daily
Location: UBC Botanical Garden Entrance behind the Reception Centre building, at 6804 South West Marine Dr. Note: please leave trees in the marked drop off location only so our visitors can access the garden and our parking lot.
Project Description:
Bayview Garden is a small container garden, with big harvests and bigger dreams. It is a collaborative project involving Bayview students, Point Grey Community Church, Jericho Kids Club Daycare and SPEC (Society Promoting Environmental Conservation). For two years, the school garden has provided all the greens for the Bayview Year-End Family Picnic, feeding over 300 people. Young student gardeners receive curriculum based lessons on gardening by SPEC staff. Students are responsible for planting, watering, tending and harvesting a wide array of crops grown throughout the year. Planter boxes were constructed by volunteers using recycled fence boards. Produce during the summer is harvested and consumed by Jericho Kids Club and the Point Grey Community Church congregation. The young Bayview gardeners are excited about receiving funds from the UBC Botanical Garden Christmas tree chipping event. With the funds, plans are afoot to expand the garden, increasing capacity for growing more vegetables. Their wish list includes new garden boxes, grow lights, improved seedling production facilities, and planting perennial berry bushes, including blueberries and raspberries.
