Meet UBC Biodiversity Collections at AAAS Family Science Days
Parents! Looking for mind-stimulating weekend events for the whole family? Meet UBC Biodiversity Collections (UBC Botanical Garden and Beaty Biodiversity Museum) for some FREE science fun at the Family Science Days during the Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). A sneak peek at our interactive activities:
What is a Fruit, Really?
- Theme: What we call fruits and what botanists call fruits can be very different things.
- Description: Visitors examine specimens of fruits and veggies to figure out what cooks and botanists consider fruits and how to figure out true fruits for themselves.
Bird Adaptations
- Theme: We can learn a lot about what birds eat by looking at the special features or adaptations on their bodies.
- Description: Visitors examine adaptations of bird specimens as well as specimens of potential prey items to figure out which bird eats which prey item
Rent-Free Roomates
- Theme: Although many of the organisms that we share our home with seem gross and creepy, they often do such important things for us that we wouldn't be able to survive without them!
- Description: Visitors will look more closely at specimens of small organisms that live inside our homes and in our yards to figure which they can live with and which they can't live without.
Name that Local Life Form
- Theme: The Lower Mainland is home to many amazing organisms!
- Description: Visitors test their knowledge of local organisms by examining specimens of plants & animals.
This community science showcase—featuring hands-on demonstrations and other family and kid-friendly activities—shines a spotlight on a broad range of educators working to promote an interest in science among the general public. Plus, this is your rare chance to have your questions answered by experts convened by AAAS!
This event is open to all, but organized especially for students in grade levels 6 to 12.
